As a look back at what I have I often wonder if I would have been better off buying land instead of iron and hiring the work done or even rent some of it out if people want to pay stupid prices for it.

I wonder that sometimes also, but the iron has really done it's part to get me where I am today.
Besides, I would have been laughed out of the bank in 2006 if I had walked in there with a plan to used every cent I had to make a meager down payment with the plan to collect today's big cash rents to pay it off. Today's numbers would have looked so wildly out of touch with reality back then that to do what now looks obvious would have simply been impossible then.
