Subject: RE: bright future for young farmers

Paradise KS
I was one of the lucky ones. I just turned 24 yesterday. At the start of this year i was farming 380 acres and had 30 head of cattle and custom harvested around 300 acres a year. I still off farm income, but its not full time work.

Now my dad and I are in the process of moving to an L.L.C combining all our assets, and putting us in a position that both of us should be able to farm full time. I think it was a great move. Neither one of us is in to much power, we can still both make decisions. My Dad has been great through all of this. He sees that he is not the future of the farm. He is the past, he can use that knowledge to teach me so i can be the future. When we make decisions, its him saying well, what do you think you going to have to be the one to deal with it once its done, but then he can also say, well thats not going to work, ive tried that before.

The potential in our area is decent. A good majority of small farmers are in their 60's +, but we still have quite a few guys that were a little ahead of me that took over their family opearations and they have taken advantage and its been hard to compete against them. If my dad gets to a point where he wants to get out ill be sitting pretty good, he is 67 now.
