Farming is part occupation and part investment plan it seems to me. If you work really hard at investing in it and have average luck you might have enough to do what you want by the time you are 50 something. The problem is that it is what you wanted to all along so why quit. It is just starting to get to be fun. I'm 58, last year is the first year I was older than average in my Farm Management Asso.
Last year was the forth year I got to plant corn in a tractor cab. Last year was the second year I didn't have to work around a town occupation schedule. The 15 year old machinery I farm with now seems pretty nice compared to what I farmed with 20 years ago and really nice compared to what I grew up with, This farming thing seems pretty cushy now and I just can't see how retirement could ever be better.
