Subject: RE: Disk drill vs hoe drill

CO, NE

I think in our area with tillage, a hoe drill is the way to go. It gets down to the moisture and can seed in the dust. Plus, I really like the way it leaves a nice ridge between rows. I think it funnels a small rain down to the seed to help it germinate as soon as it can. I could be way off base. From what I understand, disk drills won't seed into dust, unless you're full no-till of course.

Our IH-150's are a good design in some aspects, but they are just worn out. Parts are what I can make in my shop (made a countershaft this year). The bad part of the design is how close the rows are to each other. It rakes up trash and sticks between the rows. Another downside is that it's hard to get them down to an appropriate foxtail millet rate. I'd really like to replace them with a set of JD 9400's, just not in the cards right now.

BTW, this picture was when I was deciding if it was too wet to seed last fall. It was.
