The paint will cover it, but.. It may take more paint so it could be a wash.. I found when i did my basement there was a big difference in primer brands, the sheetrock brand first coat primer was junk, didn't cover and splattered. I purchased a different brand of first coat primer that covered easily with no splatter, so maybe try a different primer? I also used the purple stuff for my basement.
