What I'm hearing from guys around here is if you have sandy spots it can really pay.  For example if you are planting 35,000 and get to really light sandy spots you will have basically zero cobs.  They then have reduced pop. to 25,000 in those spots and now get 100bu/acre on the yeild monitor.  I don't have those super sandy spots, but that would be the most glaring example.


In one year (preliminary I realize) I have the same results. On sandy spots heavier populations can also cause lodging as well as very poor yields. We drop the pop. as low as 22000 along tree lines etc. I am also questioning the advantage of over 34000 pop. in most cases as well!
