Even with a coulter or two on my row cultivator it would drift as the tractor drifted. The longer tongue on the pull behind planter can reduce the immediate effect of tractor drift, but a loose hitch pin and sloppy drawbar can let the pull behind planter steer itself. That's why I went to a 2" ball hitch and bolted the drawbar down. Then the marker has to slide the planter wheels sideways to move it away from straight. When the hitch pin was loose all it had to do was steer it in the loose hitch pin.
