Australia
Jacob,

The DOT CORS networks vary greatly in regard to the technology they deploy. Some are as crude single point 'networks' with the term network used loosely. Some are Trimble VRS systems overlaying base stations with GPS equipment from Trimble, Leica and whoever else. Some are all Trimble, some are all Leica. Plenty of interoperability issues.

VRS is one technology that allows operation at very long-ranges without accuracy degradation. Leica Spider is another. In the past these technologies have been proprietary and difficult for users to interoperate with third party receivers.

The major GPS companies have finally come together and created a new standard for CORS Network corrections. It is called RTCM3.1. This enables all compliant receivers to receive the Network corrections for both GPS and GLONASS operations. This is the ONLY reliable way farmers can ensure that their system will work on the future CORS networks as this standard is adopted. RTCM3.x has adopted the open MAX and iMAX system which works very differently to VRS (Virtual Reference Station) technology. For more info...

It is my view that the small local private networks we see popping up will be 'disrupted' by the free DOT networks that threaten to cover every county in the US. These networks will finally realize Charlie Trimble's vision that GNSS positioning is a 'utility' just like water and electricity. Except, this one will be free. It's hard to compete with free. This is why mojoRTK is RTCM3.x compliant.

Cheers John
