NW Washington | I don't know what studies you have seen, but for what its worth, I did many fertilizer placement studies in dry land wheat in North Idaho years ago and our results were that fertilizer placement does not matter in winter wheat. Top dressing in the spring usually makes you money but in the fall a little fertilizer can be put on whatever method is cheapest and works best for your situation. A lot of N in the fall tends grows a lot of straw.
I think mixing fertilizer and seed is not the best idea because the mix is not apt to stay consistent in the seed box. So that leaves getting drill with a dry fertilizer box or adding a liquid fertilizer kit to the drill. Personally, I think you should continue doing things as you are and avoid the hassle and mess of applying fertilizer with the drill. | |
