I would bet pretty heavily that you DO need to have it powered to update/configure it. Doesn't Garmin provide a serial power/data cable of some sort? Let's say you were going to connect it to your laptop to use with a mapping program or just to capture the GPS strings. What kind of cable do they have for that application? Should be able to use the same cable for updating...
