NE Iowa ( Ossian ) | My family has produced syrup for 160 years from our timber. Use a 7/16 bit 1 1/2 in. deep (sharp and not real fast, will hurt veins where sap runs) Do not fill hole or reuse. Don't tap above or below an old hole or under dead branch or bad scar. Animal in pail or discolored sap must go on the ground. As you boil it will only get more dense and you do not want to eat a poor product. It is a great family project and tradition, I would be very happy to help if I can. You will never forget the taste or the smell of maple syrup.
