So I have been wondering if there is a "sticky switch" solution for this.
Would there be a relay of some type that would extend the signal from the foot switch?
Then we could just hit the switch and let go like most normal situations.
The relay would extend the signal as if we were keeping the foot switch pressed down.
I don't have this problem since I have wheeled tractors. On two of them a momentary switch is used. On the 8310R, I must use the Deere resume switch and CANNOT use the screen icon.
Concerning your idea of a sticky switch. There are timed relays that might be used. I don't know if this would cause other problems. On my first two tractors with Trimble Auotpilots, engagement takes place when the switch is released so holding it down for a long period is not a problem (well maybe if it was really long). With my previous planting tractor I would purposely feel for my switch, push it down and hold, then release when I wanted the steering to engage.
On the 8310R with GeoSteer through CAN, the Deere switch must be used, the screen Icon does not work to engage but seems to work to disengage. With this arrangement, engagement takes place based on when the switch is pushed not released.
But back to the relay. It should be possible to use a momentary switch to trigger the relay which could be set to "latch" on for a period of time. I worked with some mechanical models of such a relay that was used on a very crude foam maker. There was a knob that you could adjust for the Time OFF, the Time ON was fixed as I recall. This allowed the operator to "space" the globs of foam as desired. The timer worked fine but the foamer wasn't the greatest.
