Sounds like a bad coil/points/condenser is most likely. Sounds like the ignition goes bad when it warms up. Is that one with the Chevy 6 cyl engine ? If so,also check that the advance mechanism is not stuck. remove the distributor cap and try to turn the rotor clockwise,it should turn aprox 20 degrees against spring pressure,then snap to the original position when released. The rotor shaft is hollow,a shaft within a shaft,and they seize up if not oiled yearly which no one seems to do. If the rotor shaft is sticky or stuck,remove the rotor and put a shot of solvent in the hollow shaft end,and gently work the shaft back and forth with a small vicegrip. There should be a little felt pad in the bottom of the hole to hold an oil supply. When you get the advance mechanism moving freely,put a few drops of motor oil on that little felt lubricator pad to keep those shafts lubricated.. A stuck advance mechanism will usually cause the engine to overheat and the exhaust system run red hot,but can also cause misfire/backfire.
