east central south dakota | Great question. I believe they are real. Now on the other hand you will have to search pretty hard to find valid info to support the tie up theory to any real extent. If memory serves me right MAP is one of the larger volume products that causes concern (cadmium and Al ). Yes the metals will effect the EC number as well, but hayinhere is on the money, as well as normally salts/sodium drive ECs higher. I think they will be present for many years and to some extent forever. But if you are concerned with a field my thoughts are that anything that will support soil health ( cover crops etc ) a lot of soil porosity and a lot of biology in the soil will help move them out of the system. I also believe sulfur would help flush them to some extent. In furrow a large metal concentration would concern me, due to the antagonism and pull theory, so personally I wouldn't choose a spent acid for a starter. But good luck finding info on it. Good question. Looking forward to hearing responses.
Note: I scout a lot of acres and have yet to see any positive proof or science to say with a positive tone that heavy metals are limiting the crop. Although I do have areas in fields that i suspect its an issue. If you are concerned Midwest labs do test for it. Keep In mind soils naturally have some heavy metals present so don't get to concerned at low levels if you test your soil.
