Subject: Re: Who Plants with Wass Signal

Leesburg, Ohio
I have planted with agleader on waas, outback on waas and on portable rtk, and Deere with sf1 and full rtk.

I always had to use markers with waas. Too much jumping and drifting from pass to pass. Sometimes would jump 15' while turning around, or would drift 3' from one end to the other. Never even close after stopping for lunch.

The outback waas was better. A little drift, but not bad. Still had to use markers when stopping for lunch, or it would be way off. Never had it jump 10 or 15' like the agleader did. Easier turning on the ends and finding the row than the agleader.

The outback single-channel rtk was better and lots more consistent. Almost always within 2", as long as the portable base was not moved. Could move base, find row manually, reset the unit in the tractor, and go back to no markers.

Deere's system just works. Hardly ever need markers. Always consistent year to year. Even using sf1 to plant can be done if you pay attention to the drift and bump it very occasionally. But the Deere rtk is slick. Only time we ever use markers is on the first pass of ends under trees.

Bottom line...you can plant with waas, but you will not be gaining much over driving manually, and you will be frustrated. A system that has or will allow you to add row shut-offs/section control will pay for itself quickly, and you get the convenience of auto steer as a side benefit. Waas is not the way to do that...just not accurate enough.
