I don't think anybody saw the magnitude of this problem, but clearly those in the industry were aware that supplies could get tight this winter. The pre-booking letter from our local coop last July included a comment that there could be pipeline supply issues and if that happened then they would be forced to pass on the increased transportation costs. With that knowledge and given the much talked about demand for drying corn this fall it made sense to do something to reduce the price risk. The actual risk of not getting delivery is a different issue, usually supplies can be had barring a major widespread cold spell...I suppose that might be the black swan that nobody saw coming.
