I was reading Jon's response and thinking "I could have written that !"

The correct answer will depend on you. For years the opinion of "best" has bounced around between PC Mars and Farmworks  for most people.  Then they'll make a comment similar to "but after trying it I am doing this ..."

It really depends on 2 big issues.  What do you want from it, and what will you do to get it ?

There was a discussion on the computer pages (where this ought to be by the way)  recently about getting a report out of Quickbooks.  After looking at the responses it seems the problem isn't the software, but the user not understanding or not doing correctly.  If you want the information PC Mars or Farmworks will give and are willing to do what it takes to get the data into it, either will do fantastic.

If you are not it can be a colossal waster of time and effort.

Let me offer a suggestion:  Go to the NFMS at Louisville next month.  Before you go do your homework and find all the software vendors and concentrate on visiting them.  Look over what they have, ask awkward questions, see if anyone standing around looking at the display has it.  Often they will give you a demo package.  Some may even give you a full blown version with an expiration time built in.  See what will work for you.

I used Farmworks Trac for years and got along great with it.  My wife wanted to be more involved so we upgraded to Funds. We just could not adapt ourselves to it.  Since then it has changed, our operation has changed, I've learned more and we might be able to make it work now.

You may even find your seed supplier offering something!  I know Beck's has a field record system they are playing around with.  I think Monsanto and Pioneer are as well.  I can see problems tying my records to one company that way, but it may be something to look at.
