I have several twin tank softeners with Fleck 9100 head. A twin tank setup uses soft water from one tank to "wash" the other tank. Then switches to the other tank when it is time to regenerate the first. It regenerates based on how much water is used. Cost is usually around $1200 but it will last about 10 times longer than any softener that you buy from a big box store (GE, WaterBoss, Whirpool, ect).

First you need to determine the hardness of your water. You can usually have this done for free at a local water softnener dealer or buy a kit at a hardware store. Once you know your hardness number, you can go to the following website to calculate what "grain capacity" of softener you need: http://www.qualitywatertreatment.com/water_softener_sizing.htm

Now that you have the info you need, you can compare different softeners of the same capacity. For example, here is a website that sells the dual tank with Fleck control: http://www.cleanwaterstore.com/softeners-9100-twin-tank-well.html?m...
