| The sodium chloride in the regeneration water swaps sodium for the calcium ions that have been captures by the media in the softener, so if the regeneration volume is correct, there can be no sodium coming out, the chemical coming out in the used regeneration water is calcium chloride, but I'm sure at the end there's sodium chloride when all the media has been regenerated.
County sanitarians around central Iowa allow the regeneration water to be applied to ground directly without going through the septic tank, either a special drain field, or a field tile that they wouldn't allow raw or processed sewage to go to. Its not what I'd want to apply to a garden though.
From experience I can suggest the softener be placed where its easy to haul salt to it. 40 pound sack get clumsy going down basement steps and as I aged I began to hate that task. They don't make good cushions to land on if you miss a step.
