When I was measuring, I was a little surprised to find that the beds were very similar on the two trucks. The service truck was a Chevy w/8' bed and my truck was a Dodge 3500 w/ 8' bed. The flat bed is the way to go for sure, but I just couldn't justify giving up the standard bed on mine for a few weeks out of the year it was being used as a service truck. If you were to go to a flat bed though, it would be as simple as running a couple straps across to hold the whole assembly down. But, you'd still have the advantage of being able to have an empty bed in a matter of minutes. Keep in mind, if you go this route, that the "pallet" will need to be very sturdy as you'll have a lot of weight spread out from front to back. That's what made me lean towards building the frame out of square steel tubing. Also, being able to weld a bracket for the hose reels anywhere you wanted gave a lot of possibilities as well.
