Tuscola, IL | I had given this same thing a lot of thought a few years ago when I was still working for Case. I was always unloading everything from my service truck on Saturday afternoon and putting it into my personal truck to take to the farm. Same thing Monday morning. What I came up with was building a "pallet" out of square steel tubing. Then covering the top with some sheet metal. That way I could put eyelets in it to run straps to and keep thing secure. I was going to build it around the wheel wells in the bed so that it wouldn't slide that way removing/installing in a different truck would not require undoing any straps. My thought was to have the tool box strapped at the tailgate, off to one side. Then right behind it (off to the same side) have a job box type storage box for cordless impacts and stuff I wanted to keep out of the weather that wouldn't fit in the tool box. Then build a stand with an air reel that was accessible from the side of the truck. I wanted a little larger air compressor to run impacts up to 3/4". I had planned on that being up at the very front of the truck. I didn't carry any torch tanks with me so I didn't have to worry about them. But, it would be fairly simple to make a stand coming up off of the platform to chain tanks to. I would put them on the passenger side opposite the air compressor and maybe make a stand for a reel with the hoses on it similar to the air reel. With the tool box, storage box, and air compressor set towards the driver's side, and the torch tanks up front next to the cab on the passenger's side and the air/torch reels around the wheel well area of the bed on the passenger's side, I figured I would still have a little space for some buckets or small parts that I would need. I had this all drawn up and sketched out and was really anxious to build it but ended up leaving the job and most of my tools are at the farm now. I always liked the idea of scooping it all up with forks at once and being done in less than 5 minutes as it was taking half an hour or more to change trucks. If you build it, definitely post pictures as I've not completely given up on the idea yet as it would still be handy to switch between my truck and my Dad's. | |
