I do replace any short chain that runs fast every 200 hrs / at the end of the season. There are some that will run 500 sep hrs but they run slower/not all the time. When the sprockets get a little wear on them they will destroy a new chain.
New chains are typically $25 the sprockets they run on are about $100 plus each.
I do know that when I am combine shopping if I see chains that are original on well used machines it probably means the rest of the machine was also neglected too and I will pass on the deal.
To me it's kind of like seeing a tractor with 500 hrs and it still has the factory oil filter.
