The pivot point on the bottom of the shift lever can wear out and it won't engage the shifters properly. Like west says, you can usually take a screwdriver and line everything back up. Shine a flashlight down through the shift pattern slots and you'll see what's going on. Once you figure out where the problem is occurring, you can usually manage to run it for a good while just by holding a little pressure on the lever when you shift to keep it in contact with the piece you're trying to move. That will get you by until you have time to fix it right. Poor description, hope it makes sense.
