I would sure jack it up and see what kind of slack it has in it. If none (put on dial indicator?), I would keep checking the plug for more filings and keep checking for slack in it.
I don't think a final drive has any reason to have filings in it, not like a transmission where there are actually parts meshing and unmeshing.
