central - east central Minnesota - | catfarmer - 1/10/2014 11:41 I've been thinking of a new shop and one problem is having to remove trees (mostly mature pines - 18 to 24" in diameter). Unfortunately I can't locate it away from the trees; my best case scenario is having just 1 - 2 trees within the footprint of the building. I know an excavator could quickly get rid of the trees. My concern is the disturbance of the soil. With proper compaction of the soil, how quickly could I build? I know it would be best to wait a year or so for things to settle, but I'm thinking about all the houses that get built in the woods. It seems they don't wait between taking down the trees and putting up the houses. Is it because the foundation is block or concrete walls? In my situation would a stem wall be better than poles? Thanks for your advise Jack It wouldn't matter if you ground the stumps or dug/excavated the stumps . . .. you still need to remove all OM soil (roots) to good clean (non-OM) soil . . . then haul in gravel, class 5, conbit or something that will pack and pack it in layers (4-6in lifts depending on material) to replace what was removed. Be sure to raise the grade enough so all water from yard and roof of building flows away quickly and far out. |
