Obviously you need both. Who doesn't need more tools?

I wouldn't buy anything that isn't part of the new Fuel line (brushless) these days. Battery life and power are better than the brush motor versions. 3/8" or 1/2" depends on what you think you'll be using it for. Smaller mechanics jobs, I'd go for the 3/8. Lugnuts, big bolts out in the field, etc. The 1/2" really shines. The new M18 1/2" brushless impact is rated at something like 750 ft/lbs of torque (real world) with nut busting torque rated higher. I have no reason to doubt it. When it comes to power, I'd put it up against my IR 2135QTiMax air impact. I'd go for friction ring over pin detent. Had a dewalt pin detent impact and hated having to use a nail or something to get the socket off every time. you will have the socket come off sometimes with the friction ring, but it's worth it for the ease of socket changes for me.
