Subject: normalization of data

I have a couple questions about normalizing data. I haven't done a lot of multi year averages but as I'm getting more and more yield data I want to start using this tool more. My questions are basically this:
1: Do you always normalize the data regardless of crop? For example do I need to normalize the data if I only use corn yields?
2: Does the number of years I have yield data from affect whether or not I normalize the data. For example do I normalize the data if I only have two years vs seven years?
3: If I have a corn bean rotation and I have 5 years of yield data and I normalize the data, what do those numbers mean? Or are they simply relative to each other?

Any other insights on this topic would be appreciated. I've been working with SMS for a couple years now but have just recently started collecting yield data and would really like to use that data to benefit my customers. Thanks.
