Subject: Re: SMS mobile

Midwest
We use rugged tablets or handhelds since we beat ours up sometimes and use them in bad weather etc. Some don't have GPS receivers built in so we use a little bluetooth GPS receiver that we attach to it to keep it all together. They don't have to be attached since they communicate wireless, but your chances of losing one or the other are much higher. We also have one w/ a GPS receiver built into the unit so there we just install SMS mobile and away we go. Either of these receivers are usually running WAAS which will get you back to the same area but probably not the exact same footprints and plant you sampled earlier.

If you need a more accurate signal (Omnistar, RTK, etc) those usually need an external power source for the receiver which isn't very handy when you're walking. If you were driving, then you can just plug into the 12v plug on the machine normally.

SMS Mobile runs on the tablet (or laptop or handheld) and just needs GPS NMEA data sent to it somehow. Internal receiver, external and plugged into computer, external and bluetooth are the usual options. Just have to tell SMS Mobile where to look for that signal coming in.
