What files are you ending up getting in the results of file search screen? End in .shp, .ilf, .agdata, etc? What version of SMS are you using? (10.0, 12.6, etc) If you're on a newer version, go to File>Projects and make a new project called Test or something like that. Open that new one and try reading them there instead.
