Tractor wont fire.

From the solenoid there should be a strap to the starter and a fat wire to the battery. Then there should be a smaller wire to the ammeter from the same post as the battery cable. Then there should be a small wire to the starter switch from a separate terminal that might be labeled S. If there is a wire to the coil its on a separate post and shorts out the ballast resistor while starting. If the ballast resistor, or run wire from the ignition switch goes open, the tractor will fire while cranking, but won't stay running. I had a field of had down when my 4020 did that a few summers back. I was able to hot wire the ballast resistor to the coil and fixed it later.

Sometimes the ballast resistor is a hunk of insulated iron wire, or a coil part of the ignition switch.
