western NY | Papec stands for Power and pnumatic ensilage cutter. They started out in Lima ny around 1900, the factory burned in 1911 and they moved to Shortsville NY taking over the former Empire Drill company. They built almost exclusivly forage equipment untill they went out of busness around 1980. One of there largest distributers in TN bought out the remaining stock and handled parts for years after but I think they are gone now as well.
Around here (western NY) Papec was a household name for many years. Almost every farm had something they built. I have always been told that there downfall was there unwillingness to change. The last model 3500 Forage harvester still had some of the same castings used on the original stationary cutting boxes. They were also the last to build flywheel forage harvesters.
There forage boxes were quite popular and are probably the most common thing to still be scean on farms today. | |
