I will look at the service manual and see if it is more descriptive.  

I've never seen 1000 not work.  My experience is not tremendous, but it's wide enough to have seen 540 that did not work at least three times.  

Does the pin come out all the way?

I'm not sure what returns the pin.  Presumably there is a spring somewhere that does that.  

You really need msb or ronm....they are the ones with lots of older Deere experience.
