We've had a Kinetico dual tank system for a good 10 years and it still works good.   Our water is 110 grains hard with high TDS, so it takes a good softener.    I love the fact that it only regens when it switches to the other tank, so you save a lot of salt.    I think the biggest problem people make is buying too small a softener.
