That's where the "r" from rBST or rBGH comes from, from "r"ecombinant DNA technology. Even before the move to recombinant DNA, it was already produced by genetic engineering since the 1970s by Genentech.

There are more and more medicines that are produced by bioengineering E. coli or other organisms, these organisms are like the micro-factories of the future, programed to produce a specific protein artificially coded in their DNA.
