n.c.iowa | coup - 12/2/2013 16:50 Back the premium of $.45 out of the equation= about $90, seed cost for the NGMO corn would probably in the $50- $80 an acre less are. NGMO corn was @ the plot ave . Anything under 20 bu yield diffence in a plot like this is nothing to get excited about. Insecticide was used on all the corn, so it is hard to tell if trats added anything to yield. It's is surprising to me that a NGMO corn could stay up with the pack from what I have been told over the years. As for here, GMO corn has pretty much been a flop when it comes to producing more bu per acre. have to agree about some of the rhetoric on the supposed superiority of gmo's,but mostly in regard to "it's got rootworm protection,or corn borer protection ,hence it's got to be better".each hybrid ngmo or gmo on our farm has to stand on it's own two feet,if i got a field of ngmo laying flat,i will be upset, but not half as upset if i have a field of gmo laying flat, but there is a extra cost associated with picking up down corn. you may be in a area that gmo's add nothing for you,if i didn't have corn borer's/rootworms,i myself would plant more ngmo, but i have seen first hand what these pests can do to a non protected field.i remember picking acres upon acres of flat corn before the advent of gmo's. also the seed cost comparision is kinda a moving target, just bought some seed the other day with the latest, greatest rootworm protection for $175/bag.=$75 acre, pretty tough for me to find any top ngmo for that price.plus the extra $15 to $20 acre for weed control for the ngmo (we run 1 shot halex gt). i guess i didn't catch the lsd for this plot, but botttom line in our operation 20 bu.less yield,it would be a goner. |
