In soil test levels that are low in nutrients (N, P, and K) you will see stronger growth earlier in the season. When it comes to the final numbers and yield, there is little to no difference in yield on rows that did not have starter applied versus those that did have it applied. Some research has shown that with starter fertilizer, the plant has a quicker dry down rate depending on the hybrid. The best way I heard about the concept of starter fertilizer was: Have you ever seen a fertilizer salesman host a field day late in the season? Nope, if they are pushing starter whens that field day going to be? Early on, when you can see differences in growth stages.
