Get out your multi meter. Pin 7 of 12 pin should go to pin 5 on 9 pin. Pin 10 to pin 3 and pin 3 on 12 pin to pin 2 on 9 pin. if pin 2 and 3 are reversed you will a null modem. If using an extention cable make sure 2 goes to 2 and 3 goes to 3. If not it is a null modem which you should not need.
