Deere uses activations to help the dealer with inventory. They can carry one iTC StarFire receiver and activate it for SF2 or RTK if the customer wants it. AutoTrac is the same way. You can purchase an SF1 activation, SF2 activation or jump straight to SF2 and buy both together. The GS2 display comes with all the abilities built in and can be upgraded with software so only one display needs to be carried in inventory. It makes sense from a supplier perspective and means quicker delivery to the end user.

Trimble does the same thing with their EZ Guide 500 lightbars and 252 receivers. Dealers can carry the base level and sell upgrades to customers who want a higher accuracy level.
