The past 5 years of high commodity prices has healed the wounded , shored up the healthy . I have a feeling things will turn as always . Those who banked the profit will weather the storm . Ag is very cyclic . Been through a few cycles in my life . The conservative always land on their feet ! The calculated risk takers do well .
Ag is very regional also. Drought accounted for the high prices so those of us who had drought didn't benefit. Saw fly hurt some of us locally also. Ironically, we had a wetter than usual fall. Much of the wheat didn't get planted; we planted about 25% of intended and that 25% is crusted so there will be NO wheat for us come 2014. It is still too wet to get into the fields.
Sure we land on our feet, but the risk of then falling on our face is getting to be unbearable. Back in the 80's I said that farming locally IS NOT A GAMBLE, there is no way to make money. It has been much the same the last few years. |
