I'd rather have a few weeds than bare ground. Here, we have to be careful when we let weeds grow and how much do to losing moisture. I'm not quite so concerned about nutrient loss, I can replace that. The other thing we watch on weeds is I don't want them to produce seed. Otherwise they can create a nice seedbed by mulching the soil some. The key is uniformity. Big bare spots in areas then other areas with thick weed stands are not desirable. Probably why most cover crops are planted. But if you get lucky enough for a uniform weed crop it saves the expense of seed and planting a cover crop.
