Saskatchewan, big whitetail country!!! | Very interesting topic, one I have thought about a lot the past few years. Guys seem to have a fit if they see some non desirable green in their fields now a days. I have been shifting to a different mindset lately. As mentioned in western canada, especially in the short season areas, we have WAY too short a season for a seeded cover crop. But unless there is a real bad PERENNIAL weed issue, I let nature take her course, which is totally not typically what happens around here. Most guys spray, spray, spray.
There are several reasons I don't, barring as I said a nasty perennial weed problem:
1. Glyphosate overuse. I alread use it in the spring, and I refuse to spray the same family of herbicide more than once per year, for so many reasons.
2. With annual weeds, or volunteer crops, sure the field looks "imperfect", but there is nowhere near the time that any will go to seed.
3. In a wet region, anything that can slurp up some excess moisture is a great thing. Letting the weeds grow, does just that.
4. It is cheaper to leave it. Goes without saying....
Right now I have a couple ugly looking fields, but nothing is seeding out, so who cares?
