I hadn't heard that thistles like compacted soil, here, they seem to like very rich non compacted soil, old corrals, fencelines, tree lines, but don't do so well in the wide open hard fields, but looking at pictures of their root mass online just now, they have to do some good for compaction and OM.
Yes, I also wonder if it might be idealism from those who want to believe thistles grow for a purpose. ;)
Most compacted places where I have seen thistle thrive are not fields but recently cleaned construction land. All that bulldozing sure killed all the weeds, except for the thistle roots, each broken bit of it gave rise to a quick colonization of thistles before most other weeds had time to grow.
