Central Texas | Our old planter was a 12 row 38". Our new planter is a 16 row 30". Here are our plans for next year. The x's are skips and the 1's rows.

We would overlap the outside row every pass so there would only be 1 skip between planter passes. Our old system was:
1x11x11x11x1
You plant the full width this way with no overlap.We used this pattern the last 3 years with no problems. My greatest concern is setting this up so that we can still utilize the row clutches.
