If you right click on the box do you see a "Check Spelling" option?
How about "Languages"?
From mine you can right click and a menu pops up, roll mouse cursor onto Languages which will pop out another menu that has English(United States) and below that is "Add Dictionaries..."
If for some reason you don't have a dictionary selected, or loaded you should be able to get one from there.
