sw corner ia. | I have replaced 5 out of six rows on my old head, a couple were with the welded gears, all are still running as yet. I just do not worry about it. A getrdone guy in town has done a ton of these and he says he has replaced about as many welded gears as the new ones. I still maintain they should be cut out of a billet then hardened to eliminate this annoyance.
I run the gear sets in direct, usually 5 to 600 rpm backshaft and around 3-4 mph. the head could be sped up and pushed just about as fast as you can drive but I find considerably less harvest loss at lower speeds. I also do not try to chop the stalks at all, but I try to leave as much hooked onto the ground as possible. leaving the stump dull will not tear up your planter tractors' tires nearly as fast.
