As I recall, with those monitors all four pins in the AMP connector are used. The radar gun or GPS substitute must have pin 4 wired to provide 12V BACK TO the Early Riser monitor. This tells the Early Riser to switch from the ground drive sensor to the radar like device. This concept is not used much anymore and many adapter cables just use Pins 1-3. If pin 4 is missing I don't believe the monitor will try to use the radar signal even if it is good.
