My vet described something similar that he saw a few days ago. He posted a cow for one of his clients and found a ruptured uterine wall. The only thing between the calf and the outside world was the hide of the cow. The situation he described sounds similar to yours. He described it as looking like the worst case of bloat that you can imagine. FWIW
