John,we use tires to cover our silage pile and carefully inspect each tire for exposed wires. After reading an article several years ago from a vet down south that found feedlot deaths from wires from tires. The theory was the cold cause the wires to became brittle and break into the silage pile. After posting dead steers that were thought to have died from acidosis and other symptoms, the vet found a very large % had died from hardware and had tire wires in them.
