Subject: Re: still looking into hog finishing contract

Eastern Iowa
I have grid sampled my farm for a long time, and applied hog manure even longer. Organic matter content just doesn't change much, particularly with the low levels of allowable application (4000 gpa for finishing manure) these days determined by the EPA and DNR on our soils. Our soil phosphorous levels are falling, despite their claim that the rate we are allowed to apply is maintenance level. And the nitrogen isn't there in July and August either, despite what their university specialist indicate.

Just know that when you build barns that size, the DNR will be right there, telling you how to grow your corn!
