Subject: Re: Tell me about non steerable pup hopper trailers

central South Dakota
I go this route to make wheat planting go easier. I don't have any help, and loading wheat out of a farm truck is easier for me than out of a semi. My air cart has an auger on it, is easy to drive alongside the rear of my truck and have auger positioned to load cart. If I were to use semi and trailer, would be a bit tougher getting auger hopper under trailer. Wouldn't have mattered much 25 years ago, but I'm not as strong as I was then. Guess I could also get a smaller transfer auger to the field to make loading the cart easier with semi, but you are interested in less complication, it seems. I'm not saying this is the only way in the world to do it, but it works well for me. My pup sits most of the time. When I do hook on to the pup for hauling to the elevator, I can carry 1100 bushels of wheat legal, and around 45,000 lbs. of sunflowers. I also use a gravity wagon to hold fertilizer for the cart, holds about 15 ton. Might as well set me straight and tell me why that, also, doesn't make a lick of sense. It amazes me how often someone with no skin in the game can sit back and judge someone else's operation as falling short, or missing the boat. I'm on my 16th year of using farm truck, gravity wagon combination for planting wheat. I bought a semi and hopper bottom trailer 3 years ago, but silly me, prefer the farm truck/gravity wagon combination for planting. Fertilizer is delivered to the field into my gravity wagon, and after I've gone through 600 bu. of seed, take truck home to the bin and get more.

In South Dakota, I see lots of pups behind semi/hopper bottom combinations. Could be the bridge load limits are different for us out here than you. Having long tongue between farm truck & pup lengthens the combo for higher weight limits. My pup is 24' long, 2 axles on dolly and 1 rear, not a coupled up close axle outfit.

Just one man's opinion. Still profitable and enjoying farming.

Thanks for judging.
